Born in Harlem in 1919, DeCarava’s work was greatly inspired by the creativity and artistry of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1952, DeCarava became the first African American photographer to win a Guggenheim fellowship, which allowed him to spend a year documenting everyday moments in Harlem. DeCarava’s images offer an intimate view into the lives of Black New Yorkers during the mid 20th century. Whether documenting celebrities or everyday people, DeCarava applied the same soulful touch to his signature black and white images.
