Description

The program will begin with “The American Dream” by Jim Beckel and is a musical reflection on the freedoms and opportunities our nation affords. This work celebrates the belief that through perseverance and faith, every individual may pursue and achieve their aspirations. Its gentle middle section, featuring the hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth,” reminds us of the gratitude we hold for the land and liberty entrusted to us. Our journey continues with William Billings’ “Chester,” the unofficial anthem of the American cause. Immensely popular during the War for Independence, Chester rallied the hearts of the Patriots and fortified their resolve. Its bold and confident melody encouraged them to stand firm in the belief that God was on their side against tyranny and oppression—a song of faith and unity that became the musical banner of the Revolution.

The program also features “I Am the American Flag,” a stirring reflection on the symbols of our nation’s strength and identity. Through narration and imagery, it traces the evolution of the American flag—from the banners that led colonial troops into battle to the Stars and Stripes that now wave as a beacon of freedom around the world. Each flag tells a story of sacrifice, progress, and the enduring promise of liberty.

The evening culminates with “Colonial Scenes” a vivid musical portrait inspired by the American Revolution. Originally composed for the radio series “Independence Now!”, this suite brings to life the daily struggles, hopes, and heroism of the era. It opens with fife and drums playing “The Piper’s Pride” celebrating the contributions of African American Fifers, and continues with, Reading by Candlelight, Fox Hunt, Minuet, On Tenterhooks, The March to War, and Sons of Liberty.  This medley paints an evocative picture of colonial life and the dramatic events that led to the birth of a new nation. From the crisp call of fifes and drums to the heartfelt letters written by candlelight, the music captures both the turbulence and the triumph of those extraordinary times.

Together, these works and much more remind us that the story of America is one of resilience, hope, and an unyielding pursuit of freedom.
